Grow Biointensive Workshop - A Seed’s Journey
Tonight’s workshop is cancelled due to limited interest. Stay tuned for a new fall schedule starting in September!
Join us for an educational and skill-building workshop at Future Heirlooms - a Grow Biointensive Research, Education and Demonstration mini-farm.
Our workshops are designed to empower participants with the knowledge and basic skills needed to establish a Grow Biointensive garden at home!
Every workshop features discussion, demonstration and the opportunity to practice and skill build new techniques!
Week 7 -A Seed’s Journey- Monday August 23rd from 6pm to 7 pm
This week’s workshop will follow the journey of a grain of heirloom wheat from Italy named Solina. Participants will learn how we get from a grain of wheat all the way to freshly baked bread. Demonstrations for every step of the way(except baking) will help to connect you with where bread comes from, and how easy it is to grow your own bread at home!
During the workshop we’ll demonstrate and facilitate hands on learning of the following:
Flatting wheat
Transplanting wheat
How to care for and maintain a crop of wheat
Harvesting and drying
How to thresh and winnow
A simple recipe for sourdough bread
Nutritional value of wheat and the importance of grains in a localized diet
Participants will have the opportunity to share in some freshly bake bread, produced from the grain we grow here at Future Heirlooms!
All ages welcome, attendance by donation with all proceeds going to the Kootenay Society for Sustainable living in support of ongoing research, education and demonstration at the Future Heirlooms garden.
Please RSVP so we have an idea of attendance:
We encourage participants to leave pets at home, however we are pet friendly. If you have no other options please keep pets leashed during the duration of your visit.
