Ukrainka is originally a Hungarian Landrace, tracing its roots back prior to the 1800’s before introduction in Russia. The famous Russian botanist, Nikolai Vavilov, described Ukrainka as “distinguished by high productivity, excellent baking quality and broad adaptability”.

Additional Info:

  • Landrace pre 1800’s

  • Winter/Hard Red

  • 53” Tall/28 tillers

  • 4 1/4” grain heads

  • Fast to mature

  • Very cold tolerant

  • Survives prolonged snowpack

  • Excellent baking

  • Average Grow Biointensive yield (2021)

  • Valuable for acclimatization

  • Medium awns

Ukrainka has proven to be one of our most precious varietals, showing extremely high resistance to frost and freeze up, very fast to mature with average yields at our demonstration farm. While not as high yielding and consistent as Banatka, Ukrainka has higher potential for acclimatization and clearly presents with higher adaptability and biodiversity among individuals. Our 2nd generation Ukrainka has gained 6” in height, 1” in seed head size and doubled the number of tillers in 3 seasons, with standout plants reaching 53” in height with 28 tillers; truly showcasing the potential of this varietal.

In 2021 we had an especially long snowpack cover (5 months), and for the first time we had winter wheat die-off prior to spring thaw. Of the 8 varieties we had planted in fall 2020, Ukrainka was among the only 2 (Solina as well) that did not suffer any die-off and completely recovered when the snows melted. We believe we experienced a cessation of transpiration due to prolonged snow cover, which killed off 20-60% of plants in the other 6 varieties. Our typical 4 month snow-cover yielded 100% survival rates in the previous 3 seasons.

We have committed to continue selecting Ukrainka indefinitely, and we’re very excited to continue to work with this ancient landrace as we acclimatize and increase yields further!
