Red Fife, Wheat

CA$5.00

Red Fife is a Canadian Heirloom with exceptional yield and baking quality/flavor. Named after David Fife, brought to Canada from Scotland in 1842. Red Fife was grown extensively in Canada until replaced by modern day hybrids, however is making a strong comeback as farmers recognize the value in preserving the genetics and appreciating the resilience of this heritage grain.

Additional Info:

  • Canadian Heritage

  • Spring/Hard Red

  • 52” Tall/20+ tillers

  • 4 3/4” grain heads

  • Fast to mature

  • Very cold tolerant

  • Excellent baking

  • High yielding

  • Awnless

Red Fife has been a very consistent variety for us, producing very large hardy plants and an excellent yield. Plant height, tillering and grain heads grow very similar to Rouge de Bordeaux, but with a more creamy color.

In 2019 we observed several plants produce a christmas tree shaped grain head. We are planning to grow a select plot in 2022 to see if this trait carries forward and what effect it might have on yield.
