Sangaste, Rye

CA$5.00

This heirloom rye was developed in Estonia during the 1800’s, and is the oldest cultivated rye variety in the world! Known for extreme winter hardiness and exceptionally large kernels, Sangaste is our favourite rye!

Additional Info:

  • Estonia landrace

  • 9’ tall

  • Winter planted

  • 15lbs per 100sqft yield

  • High biomass yield

  • Fast adaptation

  • 3x normal size rye seed

Sangaste rye grows between 8-9’ tall, averaging 10-12 tillers with very large seed heads and grain 2-3x the size of conventional cereal rye.

We plant Sangaste in the fall, and surprisingly it’s one of the first crops to mature in summer, within the first 2 weeks of August! Our current Sangaste rye is 4th generation, and yields 15lbs of dry gain and 40lbs of dry biomass (50% increase in 3 years) per 100sqft. We have been primarily selecting for tillering, and have saved seed from individuals with up to 50 tillers!

*Note: Due to the height and heavy yield its recommended to provide supports to avoid lodging, especially in windy locations.
