Schrene, Barley

CA$5.00

Stock is very low, and requires a reproduction!

If you would like to help out by growing this Barley and sharing the seed back to Future Heirlooms, please get in touch!

A hulless awned 6 row barley with great potential.

Additional Info:

-3.25” grain heads

-46” tall

-High genetic diversity in plants

-Not as frost tolerant

Schrene has produced mixed results for us, indicating there is a bit of work to do in selection and acclimatization. Most plants have remained shorter with small seed heads and few tillers, however a few standout individual plants were absolutely massive with 50% larger seed heads, a foot taller in height and producing over 20 tillers.

Schrene has also shown less resilience to extreme cold in spring, with significant die off during a hard freeze event during a variety trial compared to 10 other varieties of barley. We’ll continue to select for the larger more vigorous plants that survive extreme cold and we expect Schrene to shine in time.
