Turkey Red, Wheat

CA$5.00

Turkey Red wheat traces it’s lineage back to pre 19th century Turkey before being introduced to Crimea. In the 1870’s Mennonite immigrants introduced this variety in Kansas, where it became the dominant hard red winter wheat of America’s “Bread Basket”.

Additional Info:

  • Landrace pre 19th century

  • Winter/Hard Red

  • 49” Tall/25+ tillers

  • 4” grain heads

  • Fast to mature

  • Very cold tolerant

  • Excellent baking

  • Highest Grow Biointensive yield (2020)

  • Long awns

Turkey Red wheat has been a phenomenal variety for our high altitude microclimate. Our highest yielding variety of wheat to date (2021), due to the high number of tillers. While not the tallest or most tillered variety, the consistency and number of plants with higher tillering has pushed this variety into our top producer, hitting 13lbs per 100sqft bed; more than 500% Canadian grain averages!

Very similar to Solina in appearance and time to maturity, but with a red tint.
